This symposium is a collaboration between Harp Ireland, the International Council for Traditions of Music & Dance (ICTMD) Ireland and the School for English, Media & Creative Arts, University of Galway. Keynote speaker Professor Ann Buckley (Trinity College Dublin) will deliver the Annual Harp Ireland Lecture at the symposium, which is sponsored by ICTMD Ireland this year. This symposium is one of a series of events which mark the twentieth anniversary of ICTMD Ireland in 2025.

The Arts in Action lunchtime concert with Cormac de Barra and the Annual Harp Ireland Lecture, delivered by Dr Ann Buckley (TCD), are both free to attend and open to the public.

Keynote Speaker - Huib Schippers

The International Council for Traditional Music in Ireland (ICTMD Ireland) invites submissions for the 20th Anniversary Symposium, to be held at the Rory Gallagher Theatre, MTU Bishopstown, Cork. This event will bring together scholars, musicians, and practitioners to reflect on two decades of ethnomusicological and ethnochoreological research in Ireland, exploring themes of tradition, innovation, and community in music and dance.

Themes

We invite submissions for individual 20-minute papers that engage with, but are not limited to, the following themes:

  • Ethnomusicology and or Ethnochoreology in Ireland: Past, Present, and Future

  • Gender and Inclusivity in Traditional and Popular Music

  • Creative Tradition and Innovation in Performance

  • Musical Communities: Contemporary Challenges and Opportunities

  • Archival Work in Irish Music and Dance Studies

  • Fieldwork in the Digital Age
